Students in the Montgomery Elementary School study a standards-based curriculum that divides the majority of their day among three core subjects.  These core subjects include Mathematics, English Language Arts, & Science.  In addition, their schedule includes the following special classes:

Language Arts –  The Montgomery Elementary School has implemented the McGraw Hill Reading Wonders Program.  This program is specifically designed for the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts.  Research-based instruction provides support for:

  1. Building a strong reading foundation
  2. Accessing complex text
  3. Finding and using text evidence
  4. Engaging in collaborative conversations
  5. Writing to sources – Wonders was created to teach to the rigor, intent, and depth of the new Common Core State Standards

Mathematics – The Montgomery Area Elementary School utilizes the Everyday Mathematics curriculum developed by the University of Chicago.  This program includes real problem-solving, balanced instruction, multiple methods of basic skills proactice, emphasis on communications, an enhanced home/school partnership, and technology.   This instructional approach includes both small group and whole group instruction to lead students in the development of mathematical thinking skills, rather than simple rote memorization.   These features are spiraled through the elementary grade spans to enable students to have a greater opportunity to eventually master skills.
