Tech Prep

 

     The Montgomery Area School District currently offers seven tech prep programs approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.   Students who complete these programs are prepared to either enter the workforce upon graduation or acquire further postsecondary training in their field of study.  These programs include Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Science; Communications Technology; Construction Trades; Engineering Technology; Family and Consumer Science / Human Sciences;  Human Development, Family Studies, and Related Services; and Precision Production.  Below is a description of each tech prep program with a listing of competencies contained therein. When enrollment in the courses contained in these career and technical education programs is limited, preference is given to students who plan to pursue a related occupation.  Additional information about the Montgomery Area High School Tech Prep Programs can be found here.
 
Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Science (52.0401) – The administrative Assistant/secretarial program is designed to prepare students to perform the duties of administrative assistants and/or secretaries and related occupations.  Students compose, key, format and process documents (correspondence, reports, tabulations, and forms); compile, proffread, edit and correct documents; operate dictation/transcription presentation and communication software; receive, distribute and sort incoming mail; prepare records management duties; communicate with others in person, in writing and by telephone; and perform receptionists duties.  Students also receive instruction in business ethics, principles of business law, office procedures, publics relations, and accounting.  Students are provided experiences and instruction needed to satisfy initial employment requirements.
 
Communications Technology (10.9999)  – This program prepares individuals to apply knowledge and skills in the field of multimedia technology.  Multimedia specialists provide services in a variety of areas associated with typography, web, and graphic design, video, audio, television production, animation, and photography.  Instruction in this program includes, but is not limited to, audio/visual technology, troubleshooting techniques, computer operation and maintenance, data tranmission and management, oral and written communication, math and physics, concept development, layout and design, computer graphics, image capture, audio, video, web related technologies and animation. 
 
Construction Trades (46.9999) – This program prepares students to apply knowledge and skills in the construction technology field.  Instruction is provided in the basic skills in a variety or areas associated with building construction such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, heating, and electrical.  Instruction includes, but is not limited to blue print reading; cost estimating, uses of hand and power tools, cutting, fitting, fastening and finishing various materials; and applying technical specifications and knowledge concerning the physical properties of materials.
 
Engineering Technology (15.9999) – This program prepares individuals to apply knowledge and skills in the engineering field.  Instruction includes, but is not limited to safety, ethics, power, problem solving, teamwork, engineering graphics, automated systems, fundamental electronics, manufacturing systems as well as adhering to the STEM initiative.
 
Family and Consumer Sciences/ Human Sciences (19.9999) – This program prepares individuals to apply knowledge and skills in the consumer service field.  Instruction is provided in the basic skills in a variety of areas associated with consumer service such as protective service; food and beverage preparation and service; personal service; and building and grounds service.  Instruction includes but is not limited to care and guidance of children and adults; nutrition and meal planning; managing and performing household tasks; cleaning and caring for various residential and industrial surfaces and materials; scheduling work; purchasing supplies; controlling costs; caring for fabric and textiles; custody and security procedures; administrative responsibilities; crisis intervention; institutional policies, regulations and operations; and use and care of equipment.

  

Human Development, Family Studies, and Related Services (19.0799) this program prepares individuals to serve dependent members of society by assisting them with personal, family, and home care.  This program includes instruction in the care and guidance of children; care of the aged, handicapped, or convelescent; nutrition and meal planning; marketing and food preparation and service; grooming and dressing; care and laundering of clothing and household tasks, cleaning and caring for household furnishings and household equipment; safety measures and sanitation; answering correspondance and paying bills; organizing outings for exercise and socialization; Individuals are prepared to perform duties that promote wellness and independent living.
 
Precision Production (48.9999)– this program prepares individuals to apply knowledge and skills in the production industries field.  Instruction is provided in the basic skills in a variety of areas associated with the production industries such as metalwork machine operation and numerical control operation.  Instruction includes but is not limited to blueprint reading, communications, computer operation, planning the sequence of work, use of measuring instruments, metalworking, machine operations, computer programming, welding and mechanical drawing. 
 

Assessment - Tech Prep students who complete at least 50% of their Tech Prep program in Production Industries, Communications Technology, Business/Information/Computer Technology, Consumer Service Technology, Construction Technology, Engineering Technology, are considered to be concentrators in their program of study.  They are required to take an end of program assessment called the NOCTI Assessment.  NOCTI provides occupational competency assessments to high schools in a variety of fields.  Many employers utilize this assessment as a measure of job applicants’ standards based knowledge and skills in their vocational field.  At the close of the 2010-2011 school year, forty one students reached this milestone.  This is the largest number of students to attain this status in the Montgomery Area High School.  Of these forty one students, 90%, were either competent or advanced on this assessment!   In addition, 100% of the students were either competent or advanced on the performance portion of this assessment.
